Jim Glickenhaus is through building new supercars just for himself. His new company, Scuderia Cameron Glickenhaus, is having its big coming-out party at the Geneva auto show.
-On display are two cars, one for racing and one for the street. The former will be officially on sale, and advance orders for the latter will be taken. Here’s the skinny: Both boast full carbon-fiber structures and bodywork. The race car on hand at Geneva, SCG 003C, is chassis number 1. Longtime fans of endurance racing should recognize the livery—it’s inspired by the one worn in 1967 by the fourth-place-finishing Mark IV Ford GT40, chassis J6. J6 is parked in Jim Glickenhaus’s garage. It’s plated and street driven.
-The road car that will join the racer onstage in Geneva is SCG 003S—as in stradale. It’s the street trim. You’ll notice it looks almost as race ready as the SCG 003, and that’s because it basically is. The vehicle is designed so that it can be driven to the track and then converted to full race spec and back by a crew. That part is Jim’s tribute to the era when cars were driven to a circuit, raced, and then driven home.
--What’s the price of entry? The race version carries a base price of around $2.4 million. The road car starts at a little under $2.6 million.
-Glickenhaus calls SCG 003 “LMP as GT,” and it’s easy to see why. The top photo on this post shows the car, which will compete in the GT class when it races as part of a two-car team at the Nürburgring 24-hour race in May, sharing the track with a bona fide P2 racer. While Jim’s last two cars, the Enzo-based Ferrari P4/5 by Pininfarina and the P4/5 Competizione, its race-proven doppelgänger, are modernized interpretations of a classic Pininfarina shape, SCG003’s styling is not meant to be a throwback. Instead, it’s representative of the latest race cars competing in endurance series the world over.
-Power in both cars comes from a twin-turbo V-6. The competition car, SCG 003C, boasts a 3.5-liter unit supplied by Autotecnica Motori and based on Honda’s HPD V-6 race engine. It’s mated to a Hewland paddle-shift gearbox. While rumors about the road car’s engine have included everything from a turbo W-12 to a turbo V-8, SCG has officially announced that a twin-turbo 3.5-liter V-6 will be employed and that the team is presently developing it. The supplier is still TBA, so stay tuned.
--Under the skin resides a front/rear pushrod suspension, and the race car is equipped with motorsport electronics. Dunlop tires are fitted to the SCG racer. Overseen by program director Paolo Garella, SCG 003 came together over the last 18 months. The next big step for the racer is going through the 24-hour crucible at the Nürburgring. The road car will be ready for deliveries in late 2015. The first one of those will be Jim’s personal car. He’ll street drive it in New York, vanity plate and all.
-If you see him, say hi. He likes to talk cars.
